Great Ways To Keep Your Moving Costs Down

Unless you are one of those lucky souls whose company is paying the moving tab, at this point you are probably desperate for ideas on how to bring the costs down.

The key to saving money is to take a good hard look at every room in your house and categorize as many items in that room with one of the following designations:

Here are some thought starters on items that should be considered for one of these piles:

  1. FURNITURE… if it’s old and you’re tired of it, if it’s not going to match your new decor… if it won’t fit in the new room sizes… it can be cheaper to replace than to move it and reupholster.
  2. TOOLS… if you’re moving from a house to an apartment you probably won’t need most of them… and you probably won’t have a place to store them either… will you really need the lawn mower anymore?
  3. BOOKS… just hang on to your most treasured favorites… inquire about the cost of mailing them or shipping UPS vs. moving them.
  4. PLANTS… In order to move your house plants to Florida, you must get a certificate of inspection issued by a Department of Agriculture agent from your home state. Contact the county office for inspection certificates. Under Florida law, your plants are subject to inspection upon arrival. Citrus plants are strictly prohibited.
  5. CLOTHES…. No need for your winter wardrobe anymore…leave it behind with friends and family for winter visits. Anything you know you won’t wear again should never see the inside of the van.
  6. TOYS AND HOBBY EQUIPMENT… You know what the kids have outgrown. If they want it so badly, let them keep it at their place, or if they’re still young and at home, introduce them to the concept of charity.
